Sailor Mars
Names: Hino Rei, Raye, Sailor Mars Rei is the third Sailor Senshi to join the team as Sailor Mars. Sailor Mars' powers are based on the element of fire. In the manga, Rei seems cold and quiet. She does not like men, but she is not a lesbian. She has stated that she does not want to marry because she would want her husband to think that the world revolved around their marriage, and she hadn't ever found anyone like that. However, in the manga she did have a crush on her father's secretary. Rei is considered very beautiful by many, and Usagi admires her beauty. Sometimes Rei can seem a bit distant. Once she even said she will never have friends and does not trust anyone. She doesn't get mad very often, but when she does it is like unleashing a pack of wild dogs. Rei can be a difficult character to understand. She usually hides her sensitive side. Perhaps her character is better understood when we understand her relationship with her father. Her father is a politician and never has much time to visit her. Rei doesn't like her father because she thinks that he left her mother all alone when she was sick and dying. Perhaps this is the reason that she distrusts men. In the anime, Rei at times can seem a little bit stand-offish. But she doesn't have the same cold personality that is portrayed in the manga. She had a crush on Mamoru for a while, but Rei instantly gives him up when she discovers that Mamoru and Usagi are destined to be together. Kumada Yuuichirou, or Chad, fell in love with Rei at first site and works at her temple just to get closer to her. But nothing becomes of their relationship. Rei and Usagi's friendship can, at times, be difficult to understand. Some people think that they are not friends at all. But Rei has saved Usagi's life before and sometimes you can see the close relationship that they have show up, even if they do fight a lot. Rei goes to T A Private Girls School, which happens to be a Catholic school. I find this somewhat odd as her religion is not Catholic, but Shinto. She runs the Hikawa Jinja with her grandfather. If he were to die, she would be the one to take over, as a priestess. Shinto is the earliest Japanese religion. Rei is very well known for her meditation. She gets up at 4:00 a.m. to meditate in front of a fire. Her crows, Phobos and Deimos are often beside her while she meditates. With the help of the fire, she is often able to sense evil and see who is evil. Ofuda is an anti-evil scroll that both Sailor Mars and Rei can use. When using this ofuda, she says "Akuryou Taissan," which translates to "Evil Spirit Vanish." In the manga, this power is portrayed to be more powerful than it is in the anime. Ofuda can kill people, but usually it just shocks them temorarily. Sailor Mars is a strong senshi and can sometimes seem to be in a bit of a rush in the anime. Although challenging Usagi for the leadership position in the anime, she seems quite content in the manga not being the leader. It has been rumored that the four Dark Kingdom generals were paired up with the inner senshi in the Silver Millenium. However, Takeuchi Naoko never expanded on this idea. The farthest she got was a concept drawing. This drawing showed Rei paired up with Jadeite. |
