Sailor Saturn
Names: Tomoe Hotaru, Sailor Saturn Sailor Saturn is one of the more mysterious characters of Sailor Moon. I am going to write this profile slightly different than the others. I am going to tell the story of how Sailor Saturn comes to be, and then I'll talk about her generally. We first meet Hotaru when ChibiUsa loses her hat. Upon going to get her lost hat, ChibiUsa stumbles upon a black-haired girl on the ground coughing and shaking. ChibiUsa tried to help, but the girl just pushed her away. Usagi then comes looking for ChibiUsa. A monster attacks, and Usagi and ChibiUsa transform and defeat it. During the battle, ChibiUsa is slightly injured. The dark-haired girl, Hotaru, touched ChibiUsa's arm and healed it in a flash of life. And thus, a friendship between ChibiUsa and Hotaru is born. Hotaru returns home to her father, Professor Tomoe, and his assistant, Kaolinite. Hotaru never liked Kaolinite. She tells her that she is only an assistant, and should know her place. Hotaru is having another "fit" at home, and her father asks if she's taken her medicine. Hotaru explains that the medicine didn't work. Her father then gives her an amulet that seems to help ease the pain. Later in the story, ChibiUsa goes to Hotaru's house to return the hankerchief that Hotaru had loaned her. ChibiUsa spends some time with her and comments about Hotaru's dark clothing. Hotaru says that she had many wounds from an old accident, and that is why she wears long-sleeved dark clothes. Later, Hotaru has another "fit," and ChibiUsa lets her touch ChibiUsa's Silver Crystal. The crystal helps. Hotaru tells ChibiUsa that she won't let anyone know of ChibiUsa's identity as ChibiMoon or her Silver Crystal. Hotaru and ChibiUsa's friendship grows when ChibiUsa gives Hotaru the Holy Grail model that she, Mamoru, and Usagi worked on. When Hotaru is supposed to meet ChibiUsa for a movie, and Hotaru doesn't show up, ChibiUsa gets worried and goes to Hotaru's house. There, she sees Hotaru through her window and gets a big surprise. Hotaru has mechanical parts on her arms and legs. ChibiUsa is scared and runs away. Later, she is called to duty as Sailor ChibiMoon. During a battle, the three talismans of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto appear. The Outers are concerned about this. They tell Sailor Moon that only once before have their talismans reacted: at the end of the Silver Millenium. They reveal that their talismans awoke the final senshi whom should never awaken, Sailor Saturn. At the end of the Silver Millenium, Sailor Saturn brought down her silence glaive, and everything was destroyed. Now it is happening again. The Outers don't want Sailor Saturn to awaken, because if she does, it will mean the death of the world. Sailor Neptune's mirror reveals that Hotaru is Sailor Saturn. The Outers decide that they must kill Hotaru before she awakens as Sailor Saturn. We learn of the accident Hotaru was in when she was six years old. It was a miracle that Hotaru survived. Her father converted her body into that of a machine, which explains the mechanical arms and legs. ChibiUsa is very upset about everything, and especially that they want to kill Hotaru. Later, Hotaru takes ChibiUsa's crystal and Mistress 9, an evil entity that was in her body awakens. ChibiUsa, missing her crystal, goes into cardiac arrest. Mamoru supports ChibiUsa's body with his powers of psychometry. Mistress 9 uses the silver crystal as a power source. She swallows the silver crystal and begins to give power to her master, Pharoah 90. However, the real Hotaru inside of Mistress 9 is fighting, and causes Mistress 9 much pain. Hotaru protects ChibiUsa's spirit, and Mistress 9 finds that Hotaru has caused the silver crystals powers to "weaken." A battle begins between the Sailor Senshi and Mistress 9. Mistress nine steals the four Inner Senshi's spirits for energy. Hotaru, still within Mistress 9, senses the Inner Senshi's spirits and protects them. Hotaru is strong enough to get out of Mistress 9 and return the spirits to the Senshi. Mistress 9 comes to her true form as a daimon. The daimon starts to make everything black. All the Senshi have reached their limits working to defeat the daimon. Then the talismans begin to react. The outers are horrified. And finally, to the part we've all been waiting for....Sailor Saturn appears!! She says that she must destroy everything, now that she's awakened. As Sailor Saturn is bringing down her silence glaive, Sailor Moon turns into Neo Queen Selenity and begins to save the world. At this point, Sailor Saturn is reborn as a baby. Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto agree to raise Hotaru. As you know by now, Hotaru and ChibiUsa have a strong friendship. Even later in the series, they do things as friends and care deeply for each other. Since she was reborn, Hotaru is not as weak as she used to be. Now her body is no longer mechanical. She stays a child for a while, growing at a normal rate. Then Sailor Saturn reawakens and Hotaru catches up to the age where she used to be. There is some controversey as to what Sailor Saturn's attack is. People often argue whether is it "Death Ribbon Revolution" or "Death Reborn Revolution." Personally, I prefer "Death Reborn Revolution." To me, it makes sense that it would be reborn instead of ribbon, for the reason that she destroys everything, but then things are reborn. However, it can be translated either way, and is totally your preference as to which you decide to use. In mythology, Saturn is based off the god Cronus. Cronus was the ruling titan until Jupiter overthrew him. Cronus was given a prophecy that he would be overthrown by his children. Afraid of his, he ate five of his own children. However, his wife, Rhea, hid away the sixth child, Jupiter, and tricked Cronus. When Jupiter was older, he had his siblings expelled from Cronus's body. Together they overthrew the Titans banishing them to the underworld. Cronus, however, managed to escape and rule as Saturn. Sailor Saturn's image color is purple. Purple symbolizes intelligence, religiousness, holiness, power, visionary, nostalgy, sadness, and healing. Hotaru has many of these characteristics. She has a lot of power, intelligence, sadness, and healing abilities. You might be able to loosely call her a visionary as well. |
