Sailor Moon
Names: Tsukino Usagi, Serena, Princess Serena, Princess Selenity, Bunny, Sailor Moon In the anime, Usagi may seem like a clutzy cry baby. But Takeuchi Naoko never meant her to be like that. In the manga, Usagi may start out weak, but she grows to become a strong leader and sailor scout. When we all first meet Usagi, she seems like a normal teenager. But after meeting Luna, her life changes rapidly. She discovers that she is Sailor Moon, the Champion of Justice! Becoming Sailor Moon is hard on her at first. Imagine being a normal teenage girl, and then finding out that the fate of the entire world is in your hands. This would be difficult for anyone. Poor Usagi. She never asked to become Sailor Moon. Next Usagi discovers that she is the Moon princess from the era of the Silver Millenium. Once, long ago, she was Princess Selenity who lived on the moon. It was a peaceful time. She fell in love too. With Prince Endymion, from the earth. A love between the earth and the moon was forbidden. However, this forbidden love did come to be anyway. Then the Dark Kingdon arrived on the scene. A battle ensued. Prince Endymion was killed in battle. And Princess Selenity then killed herself in sorrow. Queen Selenity, Princess Selenity's mother, used the Silver Imperium Crystal to save the members of the Moon Kingdom. Everyone would be reborn on earth, due to Queen Serenity's sacrifice. Using the Silver Imperium crystal killed her. So Usagi finds out that she is Princess Selenity, who has been reborn on earth. But just as the good has been reborn, the bad guys were reborn too. So, as Sailor Moon, Usagi is destined to drive out the negative forces on earth. And, she finds Mamoru too, who is the reborn Prince Endymion. The realization of her powers and destiny as Sailor Moon force Usagi to become mature and strong throughout the story. Of course, defeating the Dark Kingdom isn't the only challenge she faces. Next comes more enemies. These new enemies are called the Black Moon Family. They come from the future. With them, ChibiUsa appears. It is found out that ChibiUsa is Usagi's daughter from the future. In the future, Usagi becomes Neo Queen Selenity of earth. In the manga, she rises to power at age 22, and has made the earth an utopia. But some rebelled against her as ruler. They were sent to a far corner of the universe. Here Nemisis turned their hearts dark and evil. This Black Moon Family comes back to attack earth. The Queen is saved by being put into a protective crystal case, but she is unable to come out. Her only hope is her past self, Sailor Moon. So now Sailor Moon must protect her future daughter and save the earth from Nemisis. Of course she does, and in the future will be Neo Queen Selenity, married to Neo King Endymion. Naoko has never expanded on the story of their future lives, so this is all we know about that time. During her time as Sailor Moon, Usagi goes through some transformations, both mentally and physically. You can see this in her attitude; she becomes stronger and braver. Also, you can see this as she goes from Sailor Moon to Super Sailor Moon then to Eternal Sailor Moon. Usagi is evidently the most powerful Sailor Senshi. Some might argue that this is only because she has powerful weapons. But you have to remember, she must have the strength to control these weapons. Thus, she is the most powerful Sailor Senshi. Usagi's final incarnation is Sailor Cosmos. Sailor Cosmos appears in Sailor Moon Stars. Several myths surround the moon and the Sailor Moon Story. Queen Selenity mentions that the people of earth called her Selene, goddess of the moon. Another name for Selene is Artemis/Diana. This is were the cat guardians get their names. Tsukino Usagi means Rabbit of the Moon. For Japanese children, this name has special meaning. When Japanese people look up to the full moon, they see the shadow of a rabbit treshing his rice for a Japanese rice cake. There is an old tale about this, go to Silver Moonlight for more information. Sailor Moon's colors are pink and white. Pink represents romance, friendship, and femininity. Whie is a symbol of purity and chastity. Interesting note: As the moon princess, Usagi's hair is silvery white. Usagi's Zodiac sign is Cancer. Interestingly enough, Cancers are known as Moon Children whom are ruled by the moon. Cancers are very maternal, domestic, and love the comforts of home and family. Cancers are moody, and know how to sympathize with others. Cancers are easily hurt and prone to brooding around. As you can see, Usagi is a complex character. But I think that makes her interesting. She is willing to give her life for the ones that she loves. And that is an unique quality. In my opinion, she is far from the clutzy cry baby that many choose to describe her as.
