Sailor Pluto
Names: Meiou Setsuna, Sailor Pluto Setsuna always has had a mysterious aura surrounding her, don't you think? The keeper of the gates of time, she seems a bit depressed when we first meet her. In my opinion, she is the most mature of all the senshi. Sailor Pluto is the solitary guardian of time. She was given a position at the Gates of time by Usagi's mother, Queen Selenity. She has had the longest life of anyone, for she has lived through every era. Sailor Pluto lives between time, and is in charge of making sure no one passes through the Gates. Setsuna has no family, other than the Sailor Senshi. One of Setsuna's closest friends is ChibiUsa. ChibiUsa visits Pluto often at the Time Gate. It is obvious that the two have a close bond, especially in the manga. In the manga, ChibiUsa's first meeting with Pluto is recalled. ChibiUsa remembers coming to a large door and pushing on it. She is welcomed by Sailor Pluto. ChibiUsa asks how Sailor Pluto knows her already. Pluto goes on to say that she is the guardian of the Time Gate, and she tells ChibiUsa to say the word, "Abracadabra," whenever she is sad. ChibiUsa says, "Abracadabra," and Pluto makes flowers appear from nowhere using her staff. This completes ChibiUsa's recollection of her first meeting with Pluto. It is especially apparent that Setsuna and ChibiUsa have a close bond after she stops time in the manga, and is dying. During this time, ChibiUsa has been transformed into Black Lady. She sees Pluto dying and remembers Pluto as being her only friend. She starts crying. The good memories of Pluto bring her back to being good again. And, at this time, Sailor ChibiMoon is born. Sailor Pluto's other close friend would have to be Neo Queen Selenity, or Usagi. She is very important to Setsuna. Setsuna's job is to protect the queen, and fight with her. She longs to fight next to Usagi's side. After Sailor Pluto dies, Neo Queen Selenity reincarnates her and sends her to the past to fight with Sailor Moon. This is what Setsuna has always wanted. It is commented that after being reincarnated, Pluto is stronger and more focused. She also loses that sadness that seems to surround her when we first meet her. When she is reincarnated, she also gains the identity of Meiou Setsuna. She becomes an intern at KO University. Later, she works in ChibiUsa's school as a nurse. And, of course, there is a time when she raises baby Hotaru with Haruka and Michiru. It is interesting to know that Sailor Pluto holds the third talisman, the Garnet Orb. When this talisman is brought together with the other two (which Michiru and Haruka have), the Senshi of Destruction is summoned. This is Sailor Saturn. It has been argued whether or not Setsuna is of a "black/African" background because she has dark skin and hair. It is hard to say, and for those who want to argue this point, I have this to say: She has dark skin, and dark hair. We know that much. But who really cares what ethnic origin she is? Aren't we all the same, anyway, no matter what the color of our skin? To me, arguing about her ethnic background is silly. It has also been rumored that King Endymion and Setsuna were in love, or had an affair. This is just untrue. Perhaps Setsuna did have, at most, some feelings for the king. But she never had a relationship with him, and this is proven when ChibiUsa disappears from the palace. The king is looking for his daughter, and he goes to Sailor Pluto, sure that ChibiUsa might be there. Pluto says that this is the first time King Endymion has come to visit her. Sailor Pluto also thinks of the king when she dies, however, we still know that she has only once seen the king in the manga. Sailor Pluto's image color is black. Black represents depression, death, and mystery. This matches Sailor Pluto well. She seems a bit depressed sometimes, and in mythology, Pluto is the god of the dead. In Roman mythology, Pluto is Zeus's brother, and the king of the Underworld. Pluto was a fierce god in battle. He had a dark and morbid personality. He was not an evil god, but was feared because his realm was the land of the dead. He is represented as a dark, stern man with a key in his hand. (sound familiar?) Sailor Pluto is a Scorpio. Scorpios are serious about their mission and their goals. They are focused and know what they want. For them, everything is spelled out in black and white. All in all, I think that Sailor Pluto is a unique character. She has a neat personality, and I like that mysterious mist that surrounds her. |
